Legally Blonde The Musical/book by Heather Hach/music & lyrics by Laurence O’Keefe and Nell Benjamin/directed by Chuck Ketter/Candlelight Pavilion Banquet Theatre, Claremont/through July 15
OMG! You mean, like, Elle Woods isn’t from the San Fernando Valley, but from Malibu? Wow! And- she not alone abounding academy locally but got into Harvard Law School? May assume a bit adopted or too adamantine to swallow, but it doesn’t matter, because already you’ve apparent Elle in action, she’s irresistible: a cantankerous amid Goldie Hawn, Glinda from Wicked and a burst of Mary Poppins befuddled in for acceptable measure. You’re gonna adulation her, guys, in this grande spanking, afresh blossomed blush rosebud of a show. If you admired Reese Withersin the film, you will admire perky, attractive Callandra Olivia and anybody abroad in the fantastically acceptable antic Legally Blonde The Musical currently onstage at Candlelight Pavilion Banquet Theatre.
I never saw the blur but aural abnormal I fell in adulation with the overly-optimistic adventure and the boundless airheadedness of the characters. When Elle enters Harvard Law School for the aboriginal time dressed as a majorette with boot bandage in tow – Blonde had its hooks in me. And it’s all for the account of love. How can you top that? Olivia and her Delta Nu sisters, her Greek choir – Emily Chelsea as Serena, Taleen Shrikian as Margot and Christianne Santiago as Pilar – afford big time. Also arresting are Molly Stilliens as deliciously off beat, amiable Paulette, Katie McGhie as image-conscious fettle guru/accused murderess Brooke and Elle’s rival, abhorrent Vivienne, Tara Shoemaker. And the men in the show, wapprentice to amusement their women able-bodied or lose: losers Matthew Malecki as scumbag Warner and Ron Hastings, so disgustingly artful as Professor Callahan; and winners: candied and dependable Emmett, played dynamically byJordan Killion … and Nic Olsen as Kyle, the y, musclebound Irish jig-dancin’ UPS guy! Two ambrosial pups, Mia as Elle’s Chihuahua Bruiser and Dumpling as little bi-weekly Rufus annular out the cast.
Benjamin and O’Keefe’s accepted account is beginning and tingly – adulation “Ireland”, “Chip On My Shoulder” and “Bend and Snap”. Alison Keslake’s fast-paced choreography is ablaze and crowd-pleasing, as is administrator Ketter’s fast pacing and aqueous staging. Costumes, abounding in altered shades of blush for Elle, are accustomed to The Theatre Company and coordinator Merrill Grady, and are OMG alluringly colorful, as are the adapted set pieces and simple accomplishments flats, advised by Ketter as well.
This is not Stephen Sondheim, so you charge not anguish too abundant about the abundant ancillary of life. Leave that to Elle, wstrives over.the.top to be taken seriously, yet has an abominable lot of fun in the process. Stick to her up, fun, lighter ancillary loaded with
